In the 1890s, Arthur Gilmore bought a parcel of land for a dairy farm in Rancho La Brea. In 1903 he struck oil while digging for water. His son, Earl, developed A.F. Gilmore Oil Co. into the largest independent oil company in California. A baseball park and football stadium were built to mark the spot of the discovery. The franchise was owned by George Burns, Gracie Allen, Gary Cooper, Cecil B. DeMille, Walt Disney, William Frawley, George Stevens, and Bing Crosby.
