Memorable Moments:

This land was originally part of the Aaron Peck Estate, located in a residential neighborhood. As early as 1887, this land was called the "Orange Oval" and used for football and baseball by the Orange Athletic Club. It was purchased by East Orange for $45,000 and commissioned as a playground in 1907. In 1908 it was dedicated as the East Orange Oval and additional property was purchased for about $7,000. This land was used to create the Grove Place entrance and increased the park's size to about 6 1/2 acres. The original grandstand seated 1,800. Other than a baseball diamond, there were tennis courts, a shelter house, and track at this park.

In 1923, the shelter house was torn down and replaced with a new one, complete with Spanish tile roof, for $12,750. Around this time, the clubhouse beyond center field was built.

The four foot high water fountain in center field was in play. On June 6, 1986, this park was renamed Monte Irvin Field, in honor of the Negro League player who resided in East Orange for many years.
